The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING SCANDALOUS (Tale of Two Sisters, #1) . . . LOVED IT. LOVED IT. LOVED IT. I can’t seem to say it just once. I loved this read. I loved the boy next door. I loved the unacceptable girl next door. I loved that they were childhood friends. I loved they made it work for each other. I loved they found love with each other. I loved their romance. I loved the way their romance came about. I loved this read from beginning to end.

The Tale of Two Sisters series has gotten off to a wonderful start. I loved Amelia (Mia) and Julia the undesirable next-door-neighbor-girls. They were beautiful together and separate they still made an impact. The two were mischief, adventurous, and romantics. That made the read feel full of mischief, adventure, romance, scandal, fun and more. Nick being second in line has his own mind. His family wants nothing to do with the neighbors or scandal.

Getting to know Nick and Mia was fun. Their family dynamics added to the read. The other secondary characters made the read fuller and richer. The writing was smooth, clean, clear and enticing. I want more. I look forward to Julia’s story. I have some ideas. I want to see if they pan out.

Tale of Two Sisters series:
The Importance of Being Scandalous – Tale of Two Sisters, #1
A Scandal by Any Other Name – Tale of Two Sisters, #2

BlurbA horse race in trousers on Rotten Row. Visiting a gaming hall in a dress that would make her mother faint. Sneaking an invitation to a masquerade ball attended by only the wickedest, most debauched members of society…
None of these things are scaring off bookish but strong-willed Amelia Bishop’s stuffy, egotistical fiancĂ©.

The only thing left is to entice childhood friend Nicholas Wakefield into a truly engagement-ending scandal. The Wakefields are the height of propriety, and Nicholas’s parents have made it clear a wife from the neighboring Bishop family would be unacceptable…

But Nicholas would give up his family and his fortune if Amelia would ever see him as more than just a childhood friend. He’ll go along with her scheme, even if it means ruining them both, because he’s got a plan that will change her mind about him being merely the boy next door.

Nicholas tried to stay close to Amelia when they insinuated themselves into the crowd around Lady Chisholm, but Amelia kept insisting they should stand apart. He strongly suspected she was trying to insulate him from the scandal she was about to cause. He had no one but himself to blame for her thinking that way. Their whole lives, he’d let his family name hold too much sway. Somehow, he would have to convince her things were different now.
“I rather like the new styles from the continent,” some young miss made the mistake of saying.
“Nonsense,” Lady Chisholm barked. “They stray much too far from tradition.”
From the other side of the group, Amelia spoke up. “I don’t think they stray nearly far enough.”
“Excuse me?” Lady Chisholm gasped.
“I said I don’t think they stray nearly far enough.”
“I heard you, Lady Amelia. I only hoped I was mistaken.”
Amelia frowned. Nicholas thought she might give up, but then her shoulders straightened and she lifted her chin. “Are you mistaken often?”
“Rarely.” Montrose’s aunt peered at Amelia. “And what do you imagine might be appropriate attire for a young lady?”
“Trousers,” Amelia announced.
A murmur went up through the crowd. It was everything Nicholas could do to hold in a laugh. All the more so because he knew Amelia was being honest. In this regard, he was on Lady Chisholm’s side. He’d seen Amelia in trousers a number of times and he knew how distracting it was. Were it to become a popular trend in women’s fashion, the entire country would devolve into anarchy inside a week.

Kimberly Bell writes historical romance from her cabin in South Lake Tahoe or the beaches of Southern California (it’s a super tough life).
She's a pretty hardcore introvert that loves dogs, cheeseburgers, and occasional day drinking. She also spends way too much time on twitter because she thinks she's super hilarious and she’s trying to get that rumor to catch on.

MY INTERVIEW WITH KIMBERLY BELL
How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
My books all end up being funny, feminist historical romances. They also tend to be a fast read because I use a lot of quick-flowing dialogue.

What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?
just finished the first five books I contracted two years ago, so this year is about taking a short breather and then knocking out the next three-book series.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?
Definitely a natural thing. I'm starting to pick up some deliberate craft techniques now, but my first book was my first attempt at writing a book, and I worry about -over-training and losing whatever that spark was that people saw in the first book.

Do you have a character that you have been working on for a long time that still isn't quite ready, but fills you with excitement to work on the story?
I don't have any that I have worked on a long time, but I do have a few I won't be able to get to for a few years, if at all. Every once in awhile their story comes at me louder than before, and I get a ton of new ideas for it.

If you could spend one-week with 5 fictional character, who would they be?
Oh, man. In no particular order: Hermione Granger, Sherlock Holmes (in Robert Downey Jr. or Benedict Cumberbatch form. I'm not picky), Jamie Fraser from Outlander, River Tam from Firefly, and Olivia Pope from Scandal.

Where would you spend one full year, if you could go ANYWhere?
Bed? :P Probably Italy. I haven't been yet, but it already has my favorite food, coffee, fashion, and architecture.

What would you do with this time?
Learn Italian, gain 50 pounds, and see every fresco in the country.

Can you share you next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?
I just finished edits on my fifth book, the sequel to The Importance of Being Scandalous that features Julia as the leading lady, and now I'm working out the details on a companion series that starts with a book for Jasper's twin-sister, Ruby.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . .. MY HELLION, MY HEART (Lords of Essex, #3) . . . I found so much to love about this third installment in the Lord of Essex series. I did not find an overwhelming connection to the previous books that would require one be familiar with them before reading this one. I did love Irina was my hero. She was daring, courageous, feisty, headstrong, intelligent, sassy and pure woman-on-a-mission. Henry had no idea what hit him and how it hit him so hard. He has loved her from afar and was determined she needed better. She was not going to settle for less than she felt she desired. And she felt she deserved Henry.

I loved the entanglements that Irina got into. I loved her wit, charm, and spunk. She kept the story moving for me and that was the best part for me. I found a bit of intrigue around a few corners and a bit of a surprise or disappointment. I guess that would be determined on how your mind work when reading.

Full steam ahead. For me this one has topped the cookie jar. Pick this one up and let the Lords of Essex take you on a journey to forever.

Lords of Essex series:
My Rogue, My Ruin – Lords of Essex, #1
My Darling, My Disaster – Lords of Essex, #2
My Hellion, My Heart – Lords of Essex, #3

BlurbHe fought battles for crown and country. She waged war for his heart.

Lord Henry Radcliffe, the scarred but sinfully sexy Earl of Langlevit, is a beast. The only way Henry can exorcise the demons of his war-ravaged past is through intense physicality. In and out of bed. An endeavor that has no shortage of willing participants.

Intent on scandalizing London, Princess Irina Volkonsky is a hellion and every gentleman’s deepest desire...except for one. Irina knows better than to provoke the wickedly forbidding earl, but she will stop at nothing short of ruination to win the heart of the only man she’s ever loved.

But when one scandalous kiss makes dangerous passions ignite, neither of them can fight their sizzling attraction. When a sinister plot emerges to threaten them both, they will have to fight one last battle, this time for the ultimate prize...love.

“You’re good with children,” her sister commented as they left. “You should think about having some of your own.”
“I am content with yours, thank you.”
“Irina—”She stood, raising a hand and strode back to the window.
“I don’t want to fight with you about this, Lana. The truth is I have no interest in marrying anyone. And, yes, I do intend for London to be a repeat of Paris: diverting and fun. I won’t be anyone’s trophy.”
“Is it because of Lord Langlevit?”
Irina’s breath halted painfully in her lungs. She turned to face her sister, composing her face into a mask of indifference. “What do you mean?”
“You’ve carried a tendre for him for five years,” Lana said quietly. “Ever since you were fourteen. I suspect you still carry it, which is why no one else can measure up.”
A hundred reasons, excuses, words popped into Irina’s brain. Her sister had always been able to see right through her. She settled for four hard ones. “You mean my infatuation.”
“That doesn’t mean your feelings weren’t real.” Her sister rose unsteadily and met her at the window as Irina’s fingers wound into the folds of her skirts. “Certain events draw people close, tying them together in inexplicable ways. It’s not surprising that you...cared for Henry.”
“Hopelessly unrequited, as it were.”
“Be that as it may,” Lana said. “Henry is not the same man you knew, and I know you can see that for yourself. He has changed.”
“Because of France,” Irina whispered.
Lana nodded. “He’s never confided in me, but yes, Lady Langlevit has suggested that what happened to him is beyond understanding. I fear much of him was lost there.” She pulled Irina close. “I don’t want you to lose your heart to him and have it broken. You cannot save him, no matter how much you may wish to.” Her voice wavered. “Trust me, Henry does not want to be saved.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he told me so.”

“The way I see it, you set forth a challenge. I am debating whether or not to accept it.”
“A challenge?” She frowned. “I don’t follow.”
He unfolded his arms and stalked to where she stood. Gently, his hands draped her shoulders. Strong, but without pressure. Without violence. “You said I would have to try harder for you to be convinced I am a scoundrel. What is that, if not a challenge?”
Words hovered on the tip of her tongue but failed to escape her lips. He shouldn’t be holding her, regardless of how warm his hands were against her body. He shouldn’t be so very near. She drank in subtle notes of sandalwood on his jaw and his throat. He shouldn’t be studying her with those perceptive eyes, a glint of sensual interest darkening his sapphire irises.
She drew in a breath, even as he held her closer still. If she’d detected any hint of danger, she would’ve brought him to the ground with a well-placed knee or a calculated swing of her weighted reticule against the pulse point behind his ear. But this man did not present that nature of a threat.
No, the danger in his touch was more subtle. More insidious. And ultimately, far more powerful. She could not betray the effect he had on her. She could not give him that weapon against her.
“I meant what I said.” A miracle, how steady she held her tone. “When I look at you, I do not see a cad. I see a man in need of answers. The only question is, what are the answers you truly seek?”
“And if I kissed you? Would you think me a rogue?”
The heat in his gaze kindled a spark deep within her, but she steeled herself against the sudden and powerful need. She could not let on how delicious his breath felt against her cheek, how good…how right…it felt to be in his arms.
“No.” She lifted her gaze to lock with his. “I would think you a man, with a man’s desires and needs. Nothing more. Nothing less.”
“You are a temptation I could not have anticipated.” A tiny muscle in his jaw tensed. “And I…well, I am a bloody fool.”
His hands slid lower, settling on her leg-of-mutton sleeves, and he dipped his head. She might’ve imagined the sound, but his breath seemed a sigh. And then, his lips claimed hers in a kiss.
Oh, my, such a delicious caress. Shock rippled through Sophie’s veins, coupled with an instinctive alarm. Not fear. Far from it. Rather, this man’s touch should not feel so very tempting, so very tender. So maddeningly right.

Tasty Q&A with Tara Kingston
Can you tell us a little about your book?
I’d love to tell you a bit about When A Lady Dares. The story is set in London during the late Victorian era, a few years after Jack the Ripper roamed the alleys of Whitechapel. The heroine of the story, Sophie Atherton, is an undercover agent for a secret government agency called upon to pursue criminals who pose a threat to England—cases that require specialized expertise and resources beyond the realm of Scotland Yard.

If you had a theme song, what would it be?
It’s a tie between three songs, depending on my mood:
Paperback Writer (The Beatles)
Don’t Stop (Fleetwood Mac)
Roar (Katy Perry)

Name one thing you won’t leave home without.
My e-reader…I always have to have a great book on hand.

Name three things on your desk right now.
My laptop, a variety of multi-colored post-it notes with my scribblings on them, and a very old folder with Han Solo’s picture on it, just because… after all, who wouldn’t want a large picture of Harrison Ford on their desk?

What do you like to do when you aren't writing?
When I’m not writing, I love to spend time outdoors with my husband. We ride our bicycles, hike in the state parks near our home, take long walks, and generally, enjoy nature. I also like to head to the beach every chance I get—a day at the beach is good for my soul. I enjoy watching a good comedy, and in the fall, I love getting together with friends to watch football and cheer on my favorite team.

If you could have dinner with any three authors (alive or dead), who would you choose and why?
Jane Austen —I’d love to discuss her inspiration for Mr. Darcy and get her thoughts on a matter of great importance—who’s the better Darcy—Colin Firth or Matthew Macfadyen? For the record, I’m Team Firth.
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley — She wrote Frankenstein… need I say more? Discussing her inspiration for the novel and the characters would be fascinating. I’d also love to get her opinion on the great portrayals of the monster in film… who’s her favorite—Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Peter Boyle, or Robert DeNiro? Personally, I have a soft-spot for Peter Boyle’s portrayal in Young Frankenstein (or is that Fronk-en-steen?)
Charlotte Bronte — Jane Eyre is one of my all-time favorite novels. I’d be thrilled to discuss the inspiration for Mr. Rochester with the author who created him…simply fascinating!

What 5 things should readers know about you?

~ I am hopelessly devoted to Fox Mulder and have watched every episode of the X-Files.

~ I can cook, but it’s a pretty rare occasion when I make anything from scratch. I’d rather be writing, biking, walking, laughing at a good comedy, reading on a beach, reading on my porch, painting furniture… pretty much anything but standing in the kitchen.

~ I do not like sad movies and books. I’d much read a happily-ever-after or enjoy a movie comedy or a rollicking adventure—Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of my favorite movies of all time. The adventure, the gorgeous hero (yes, I adore Harrison Ford, as evidenced by the fact I possess a years-old folder with Han Solo on the front), and the touches of humor make it an ideal movie for me.

~ We have two kitties who were incredibly innocent-looking when we adopted them from the shelter, but the pair quickly began to compete for the title of “bad kitty”. We’ve actually had to child-proof a cabinet in the kitchen to keep one of them from opening the door and walking right in, and trust me, you do not want to see what they will do to a bag of treats that’s left out on the counter. But they make up for their naughtiness with their sweet, loving ways. They really are cuddle-bugs.

~ As a child, I loved to read Nancy Drew books non-stop. Even then, I enjoyed stories with clever heroines and a good mystery. This has definitely carried over to my own novels. I love to read and write romance with strong heroines and an air of mystery threaded through the story.

NetGalley REVIEW - Virtual Tour - My Darling, My Disaster (Lords of Essex, #2) by Amalie Howard and Angie Morgan

My Darling, My Disaster
Lords of Essex, #2
by Amalie Howard and Angie Morgan
Releasing March 27th 2017
Entangled Select Historical

The Book Junkie Reads . . . REVIEW of: My Darling, My Disaster (Lords of Essex, #2) . . . I must remark that I have to go back and read My Rogue, My Ruin, I am in love with the enchanting characters. The fantasy historical world of romance, royal, nobility, secrets, past, danger, and mystery. The characters are charming, intriguing, strong willed, self-assured, intelligent, crafty, and bit more of what I like and don’t like at times.

There was a princess. A real and true princess. But she was not the one being pampered. She was the one doing the work and given lots of sass. Lana was a princess that knew about life, good and bad. She had to make do to make it. She was not beneath the task given her to survive and see that her uncle pays and she and her sister live. But she was not counting on the lord of the manor to be so specious of her. Lord Graham had things he wanted to keep hidden so he knew a thing or two about someone hiding things. This Lana person. She had something she was hiding and Graham was determined to find out what it was.

This read was one filled with twist and turns for a historical romantic suspense with secrets, lies, murder plots, strong wills, and stubborn lady’s maid. This was a fascinating suspense with much conspiracy and a bit of sexiness wrapped with nobility and royalty.

I love Lana. Gray had his moments of success also. He loved his sister and wanted no harm to come to her. There was also something about the lady’s maid that had him wanting more from her also. She was feisty, regal, strong-willed, self-assured, alluring, captivating and he knew there is more to her than what she presents.

Howard and Morgan gave me a historical romance that had me turning pages and wanting so much more. I want to know the other stories that run alongside this one. I want to know what happens to Lana and Graham’s sisters. I want more of the Lords of Essex.

Lords of Essex series:
My Rogue, My Ruin – Lords of Essex, #1
My Darling, My Disaster – Lords of Essex, #2

Blurb"A hearty dose of secrets and burning passion. A page-turning escape!" – Eliza Knight, USA Today bestselling author

A princess who had it all. A lord with everything to lose.

Lord Graham Findlay, the shamelessly virile Viscount Northridge, has a disgraceful secret, one he’ll do anything to hide. Holding his passions at bay, Gray has sworn off the fairer sex. But when temptation comes in the form of an intriguing woman he cannot easily avoid, Gray’s integrity—and his most depraved desires—are put to the ultimate test.

Self-assured and carefree Princess Svetlanka Volkonsky never dreamed she would one day become a lady’s maid to avoid a dangerous traitor. But danger also comes in many guises, especially in the sinful and devastatingly attractive lord of the manor who introduces her to a world of singular pleasure.

When Lana’s past emerges to threaten the life and the false identity she’s built in England, she and Gray find themselves falling into a tangled web of lies and intrigue...and the last place either of them expected to fall...in love.

The interior of the coach felt hot, and she could swear that Lord Northridge’s body was closer than it had been moments before. Lana’s pulse spiked, every inch of her skin prickling with bright awareness. She had been courted by suitors before and had been the recipient of hastily stolen embraces in the arbor at Volkonsky Palace. But no man had ever made her feel the way she did now—like a fox in a hunt with nowhere to run. Her short nails dug into her palms even as she feigned continued indifference. It was a talent she’d inherited from her mother: the ability to remain tranquil and unruffled in any situation.
But, lord, the man pushed her to the limits of her skill.
Despite her composed exterior, Lana was acutely conscious of him. With each inhale and exhale, she could scent the spice of his cologne and the bite of whiskey and cigar smoke, see the rise and fall of the pulse in his neck, hear the rustle of his clothing against the plush velvet seat. She could feel his hooded eyes settling upon her as if they were hands pressing against her flesh, boldly pushing past the confines of her cloak.
Undressing her.
Refusing to succumb to his debauchery, she met his eyes with cool hauteur, and they dropped provokingly to her lips. He was trying to shock her, she knew. But Lana held his stare, refusing to be cowed by whatever new perverse game he was playing. She swallowed a biting response that would remind him of his place, and hers—Lord Northridge at the best of times was unpredictable, and after a night on the town with liquor in his blood, she would do well to curb her tongue. Lest he force himself upon her like some lovelorn swain.
No, not lovelorn. Lord Northridge would not allow such a common emotion as love to rule him. The art of his seduction, if at all, would be calculated and ruthless…meant only to serve him and no other. Lovesick females fell at his feet, not the reverse. Lord Northridge’s eyes met hers as if her thoughts had grown transparent, and she flushed when another knowing smirk appeared.
Lord have mercy, he made her want to kick him. Hard.
Flustered, Lana couldn’t quite help herself as the coach finally rolled to a sharp stop in front of the manor. “Like what you see?” she asked in succinct tones.
A reluctant smile tugged at the corner of his lips at her veiled mockery. “Very much.”
Lana went still at the candid admission. He looked as surprised as she did. An arctic flush suffused her chest and climbed her neck as James opened the coach door. She slid forward, taking the footman’s hand and making her escape with every ounce of grace she could manage. “Perhaps you should endeavor to foist your attentions where they will be better welcomed. Good day, Lord Northridge.”
His husky chuckle at what would have been a crushing setdown in any other circumstance followed her all the way to the front door.

Q&A with Amalie Howard & Angie Morgan

Describe yourself in five words or less.

AMALIE: Creative, fun-loving, humorous, passionate, free-spirited.

ANGIE: Relaxed, creative, inquisitive, cheerful, active

Can you tell us a little about your book?

MY DARLING, MY DISASTER is a fun, sexy story about an arrogant young lord who meets his match in a runaway princess disguised as his sister’s lady’s maid. There’s mystery, suspense, action, and buckets of sizzling romantic tension.

If you had a theme song, what would it be?

AMALIE: Journey’s DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’...seriously, it’s my personal anthem. Also, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY by Queen when I’m feeling saucy.

ANGIE: HAIR UP by Justin Timberlake from the movie TROLLS should play from magical speakers whenever I enter a room.

Name one thing you won’t leave home without.

AMALIE: My phone. I can work while waiting for my kids at various activities. That, and pants. I never leave home without pants. Because that would be awkward. And maybe scary for some.

ANGIE: There is NOTHING I won’t leave home without. Trust me. I’ve left home without my purse, my phone, my CHILD. Just kidding. I usually remember them all. But I do always remember to put a bra on. #goals

What are some books that you enjoyed recently?

AMALIE: Two recent historical romance books I really enjoyed were THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE by Jennifer Ashley, and WILD WICKED SCOT by Julia London. They’re both very different, but the writing in each is sublime.

ANGIE: I loved THE ALIENIST by Caleb Carr and am so excited for the TV series starring Luke Evans coming up soon! I thought PROMISE OF FIRE by Amanda Bouchet was a really fun romantic fantasy. Right now I’m reading BARED TO YOU by Sylvia Day and I’m constantly blushing.

What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

AMALIE: I’m an obsessive/compulsive reader. Sometimes, on a reading binge of a particular genre, I can read a book a night for weeks at a time. I also like to watch movies. I’m a very visual person, and films are my guilty pleasure. Put it this way, I’ve already seen Beauty and the Beast twice and it only opened two days ago on Friday. I saw Deadpool at least a handful of times in the theaters and bought the Blu-Ray, and let’s not even talk about The Force Awakens. Anything Marvel can take my money. I’m super excited for Ghost in the Shell and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2. #DIEHARDFANGIRL.

ANGIE: I make sure writing happens almost every day, and I’m usually working on more than one project at a time. But on my off-hours, I’m a school volunteer, a chauffeur for my daughters and their friends (unfortunately, there’s no bus transportation for our small school!), my town’s official crazy chicken lady, a freelance editor for Independent authors, a long distance runner, and -- whenever I get the chance to sit down -- an avid reader.

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?

First of all, don’t be afraid to write what you love, and have confidence in your ideas.  For any new writer, we would encourage reading as many books as you can get your hands on—the more you read (especially books that have been successful in the genre), the more you’ll understand the elements required to pen an equally successful novel of your own. Reading outside of the romance genre will broaden your scope, too. The most important piece of advice though is just to keep writing, keep trying, and keep reading.
